Last Catch

Posted on 00:50 by Unknown

Last catch of the season. We caught pearl spot 'Karimeen' and various types of fresh water prawn almost every other day in Vellayani lake. I'll be travelling most of the next two weeks. First to Bangalore for the Pycon India 2009 and then to Hyderabad to spend sometime working in Hyderabad university.

Configure Broadcom Wireless Drivers

Posted on 02:40 by Unknown

Getting the Broadcom Wireless cards to work with gnu/Linux was bit tricky. Even though linux kernel included the free software b43 driver for a long time, getting these wireless cards working needed some manual configuration. In this post I am testing Ubuntu Karmic and b43 driver to configure Broadcom BCM4311 Wifi card. .

$ lspci -vnn | grep 14e4

04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01)

Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:0465]

06:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5906M Fast Ethernet PCI Express [14e4:1713] (rev 02)

To get started I used 'Hardware Drivers' to find and load the needed drivers. From main menus select System > Administration > Hardware Driver program or type ' sudo jockey-gtk ' in a terminal. The Hardware Drivers program found two drivers on this machine 'Broadcom B43 wireless Driver' and 'Broadcom STA wireless driver'. I selected the first and then pressed the 'Activate' button. The program connects to the Internet and downloaded the driver, so make sure you have a wired connection setup before hand.

After the driver was setup and rebooting the computer the wireless works perfectly with Network Manager.

Most people use Ubuntu LiveCD to try if their hardware is supported. As of writing this post the Ubuntu LiveCD doesn't configure and load the broadcom drivers automatically.

Hacker T-shirt Idea

Posted on 18:00 by Unknown

One look at this Wordle word cloud visualization of Bruce Sterling's book The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier. I knew it would make a great hacker t-shirt!

Take a quick peek (picture above) how it will look when done.

Posted on 20:03 by Unknown

Tweeting is not a waste of your time. Few hours ago I started promoting the upcoming web accessibility workshop by posting it to twitter. And the workshop trainers Rahul and Srinivasu started connecting online via twitter. It is good example of twitter social networking in action.

Posted on 00:23 by Unknown

During the last National Workshop on Web Accessibility in Bangalore I said to Nirmitha (Center of Internet and Society) "Let have the next workshop in Trivandrum".

Thanks to support of Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE), Insight ICT Centre for the differently abled and Kerala State IT Mission this event comes to Trivandrum, Kerala.

We want to take this workshop to other cities in India. If you are interested leave a comment or email me.

Announcement of National Workshop on Web Accessibility

The Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) and Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE) are organizing a workshop on web accessibility for web developers from the public and private sector from September 25 to 26, 2009. The workshop will take place at Christ Nagar International School, Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, between 09:30-17:30 hours each day.

The workshop seeks to bring together practitioners from Government Departments, as well as from small and medium enterprises across the country. The primary aim of this workshop is to demonstrate the importance of creating accessible web sites and to educate the developers of government and private web sites on how to incorporate accessibility features into new as well as existing web sites.

The training comprises both theory-oriented and practical sessions. The trainers are specialists in various aspects of web accessibility. The main focus will be on WCAG 2.0 guidelines. The workshop is for persons already involved in developing web sites with good knowledge of HTML, XML, CSS, etc. In addition to training web developers in accessibility, the workshop will also serve as a platform for capacity building by training potential accessibility trainers.

The programme is supported by Kerala State IT Mission, which runs INSIGHT - ICT Centre for the differently abled in association with SPACE.
